Technology is a gateway to addiction. News cycles, live feeds, inflammatory remarks, lies, gossip... these become the marketing tag lines to draw the user in and keep them. The more constant the user, the more they continually seek to find the latest gadget to meet their fix for instant gratification. All the while the brains chemistry gets altered with the stimulation of dopamine, oxytocin, serotonin, and endorphins. Who needs a drug dealer when the addictive substances already exist in our brain chemistry; they simply need to be stimulated.
Technology provides the deliver mechanisms for control. Users create rationale reasons for every engagement... “this app will make life better for this reason”... “I need to watch the news to stay informed” ... “the latest smart phone will give me 2 megapixels better resolution with my photos” ... “I need to know what is going to happen to the President”. Sit back for a moment and think about what we need. Does the new widget provide food, shelter or clothing? Does a higher resolution photograph mean it tells a story of greater truth? Is news delivered for the purposes of bettering humankind or... to increase viewership, market share and stock value? Do our political institutions value the people and rule of law?
When everything becomes a function of power and profit, the mechanisms tied to that are designed to maintain the status quo. So be bold... be courageous ... be a patriot if you will... have the courage to disengage. Step back from the hype and the nonsense. Assess how you live your values. Make what you say meet what actions you do. Be American.
